The amazing, cliffhanging Blanchards!

26 March 2008, Reality Shoot

Imagine how crazy it would be to photograph an entire family hanging from a cliff. Well, just a few weeks ago my crew and I pulled it off... and I've got a whole bunch of behind the scenes pictures to show how it all went down!

When I first meet with a family to go over concept's for their photograph, I try to block out the fact that the shot we might come up with could --quite literally-- be impossible. I always think that we will have to tone the image down a bit for the "real thing". However, 99 percent of the time, we end up going all out with the original plan, and this shot of the Blanchard's was no exception.

I started having my productions filmed in HD recently, and I thought I would give you some screen captures from this particular video. Two of the coolest members of the family, (their gold fish, and tarantula:)), are not in this set of photographs, but will be included in an update as soon as I get my hands on that part of the video.

I will have to say that the hardest part of this image was the goldfish bowl, and its splash. It's one thing to cut out an object, it is however, an entirely different thing to cut out transparent liquid, and have the background show through the water and glass...phew!

Wow! Amazing work as always. How long was the shoot? 1 day 2 days? That must have taken a lot of planning too. The 4 individuals pictured at the end, are they assistants? What roles did they play?

Ron, the shoot was technically 3 days. I shot the family in Studio in about 2 hours, and then drove out to the desert to get the backdrop. It required many hours of planning, and tons of post production. The 3rd day of shooting was short and sweet with the spider, and fish.

The people in the last image were my assistants, stylist, and one intern. The dad in the family did all of the needed rigging for the climbing wall, and my stylist did a wonderful job with all of the hair and makeup.

Because the shoot had to move so fast everybody really helped out, and covered other areas that needed attention. Having great assistants makes all the difference!

Just when I think, what can he possibly do now, you go and do this! Absolutely, incredibly, amazingly, unbelievable! Being the amateur photographer that I "claim" to be, I am constantly seeing things and coming up with new ideas. But no where near the level that you probably do. How do you even sleep with all of these things taking shape in your head? Anyway, enough rambling, great work, please keep it up, and I cant wait to see what youcome up with next!

Thanks everyone... and to Ms. Bettis, regarding my sleep, I keep my iPhone next to me at night, and write anything that comes to my head in it, also, I have extreme ADHD:) That always helps right?
